    The Origin of Waking

The Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear

The Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear

Yet another image from my Origin of Waking series.

The idea for this image came about after I had written the song. In the middle of the song is a 3/4 carnival style section that really painted this image in my mind. This image personifies the childlike exploration and fear that I wanted to explore in this series. A child finds his way through a dark carnival and approaches an illuminated tent.

The set was built out of cardboard and construction paper. It was all held together with glue, cymbal stands and a CD case. The ferris wheel is an old cymbal covered in black gaffers tape to give the illusion of giant spokes. The ferris wheel was photographed separately and placed in the background. For lighting, I used several of my mono lights.

Img0538When photographing the boy, played by the son of Josh Winegar, I used a large softbox to emulate the light of spilling out of the tent and a light with a blue gel boucing off a back wall to act as a fill.

This image was partly inspired by one of my favorite scenes in the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” In the scene, a mother sees aliens coming through the clouds and does all that she can to prevent them from entering her home, but the boy wants nothing more than to get a closer look. Any fear he might have is overshadowed by his curiosity.
