    The Origin of Waking

The Fall of the King of Stone

In this installment of The Origin of Waking, we meet the King of Stone.  His story is told in the form of a song.

Through the music, we see his rise from nothing to his appointment as king. We experience his corruption and the ultimate abandonment of his people. That is where the photograph takes place. As I was making the photograph, it just kept growing and getting more vast and empty.

The setting of this photograph is comprised complete of paper. The throne is made of cardboard and lined with black paper. The rocky terrain is made of crumpled up orange paper. The ceiling and back wall are made from the same orange paper glued to the inside of a box. It was a lit with a little flashlight. The king is played by Josh Winegar. His crown is made of card stock and foil, and his sash is a towel. He was lit with some strobes in hopes of matching the lighting of the miniature set.

For the music, I wanted it to have the feel of a 1980’s fantasy soundtrack. I used a lot of synthesizers and electronic drums. My hope is that it will give listeners some insight into the emotions that defined this characters life.
